The Japanese AI Landscape is still evolving, with a strong emphasis on collaboration between industry, academia, and government to drive innovation and economic growth. However, some argue that it’s still lagging behind.

Japan faces challenges in fully embracing AI, including a shortage of AI talent, cultural barriers to innovation, and some growing concerns about job displacement.

New players entering the scene might change the innovation game, however—most notably Sakana AI, and now OpenAI’s new Tokyo office.

In February 2024, GENIAC was launched by the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry (METI), which “aims to improve Japan's development capabilities by bringing together the knowledge of stakeholders in Japan and other countries.”

This week, Blaine will give an overview of the general AI landscape in Tokyo - what companies of note are already here, what they do, and what Japan’s gradual AI industry expansion means for your business in the Tokyo landscape.
