In 1937, Claude Shannon's master's thesis used Boolean algebra to logically analyze electromechanical circuits - connecting electromechanical engineers to mathematicians and logicians, changing "digital circuit design from an art to a science" (Goldstine).

Close to a century later, business process analysis is amenable to mathematical and logical analysis, through digital representations such as Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN) - connecting business analysts to researchers and engineers.  Modern tooling allows digitized processes to be automatically orchestrated, monitored in dashboards during runtime, and generate training data for subsequent optimization. Part of the discussion will also draw on Simić, Tanković and Etinger (2023), who used BPMN to optimize cloud workflows.

Join guest speaker Colin Rowat for an introduction to BPMN - already used at scale by companies like Goldman Sachs and Rakuten Symphony - and a peek at the technology that might one day enable Altman's vision of "one-person unicorns".
